Have the winter blues? Check out all of the cool things you can do right in your own house:
Shake things up: get physical indoors
- Turn on the music and dance. Any music or exercise video will do.
- Make an indoor obstacle course. Rearrange the furniture to make obstacles to climb over, under, around and through. Be sure to check with mom or dad before you begin.
- Finger paint. No paint in the house? Ask Mom or Dad if you can finger paint with chocolate pudding on freezer paper or waxed paper. Lay newspapers on the floor below your work area, and protect your clothes with smocks or old, adult-size shirts.
Think things out: be creative or learn something new
- Put some fun into lunch. Help your mom or dad make green eggs and ham (a drop of green food coloring added before cooking scrambled eggs will do the trick.) Other favorite books, TV shows or movies can inspire a unique lunch. Ask if you can help measure, mix and setting the table, but watch out for hot stoves, microwaves and food.
- Learn a new skill. If you are involved in scouting or another group, turn to that group’s materials for activities to try. Pick an achievement to accomplish on your own, at home. There usually are many simple activities to choose from and in the end, you may earn an award from the group.
- Visit the library. Even beginning readers can get a free library card from most libraries. Ask your mom or dad to help you get your own library card and check out your own book or video.
