I have been in the Milwaukee Teen Health Crew for two years and so far, my favorite program to teach is the dental program.
When I was teaching Get Moving for the first time, I didn't exactly have a cooperative class – but what is new, that happens. I was trying to explain what the kids should be doing and they all just completely ignored me and started dancing ... I mean dancing, like way better than I thought ANY elementary school kid could dance, and I don't think there was even any music playing!
It was just like a "wow" moment, I'm really that invisible. That's just one of those moments when you have to just go with the flow and laugh it off. That really pushes me to try and relate to the kids more, to get on their level ... just to make myself a bit more interesting to listen to! The kids just want to have fun. Just like everybody else.
In the rest of my life, I'm involved in a couple of activities. I'm in the Marching Band, track and rugby team. This summer I'm taking an ACT prep course (lasting around three weeks) I am also joining the girl’s tennis and gymnastics team.
The best thing about the Teen Health Crew would have to be the people. I'm an outgoing person and meeting new people is always a thrill I look forward to. The people I teach with are amazing and outgoing teens. All of them have such bright futures! Being around them makes me want to push myself harder, just to feel like I can fit in. I love going around to schools and meeting new faces. By doing this program I strive to be the best person I can. You know it's not that easy going in front of people and teaching - especially if it's a program you're not familiar with. So, I try my best to let down my guard and just have fun with it. I try to teach the way I would want to learn. And just being around these awesome teens alone is an experience I will never forget.
