Asthma Survival Skills*

Note: Classes held at Children's Corporate Center are in Suite 255.
This class helps families learn skills to live with asthma. Learn how asthma affects the lungs, how to recognize early warning signs and prevent emergencies, how to manage indoor and outdoor triggers, how asthma medications work and how to work with school and health personnel.

This class helps child care providers recognize and deal with asthma in the childcare setting. Learn:
  • What asthma is.
  • Early warning signs.
  • How to care for a child in the early stages of an asthma attack.
  • Common asthma triggers and how to make your center asthma friendly.
  • How to use spacers, inhalers and nebulizers and what to know about asthma medications.
  • Questions to ask parents of children with asthma.

More than 30,000 children in Milwaukee County have asthma. Asthma Wellness

Day is part of a community-wide effort to increase quality of life for asthma sufferers, reduce hospital stays and raise public awareness. This asthma health fair will provide resources, education and consultation with health professionals to help families better manage asthma. Family-friendly activities include:

• Free asthma screening.

• Asthma education activity stations.

• Advice about asthma medications.

• Models that show how your lungs work.

Doctors, nurses and other asthma experts will be on hand to answer questions. Free asthma management tools such as spacers, peak flow meters and pillowcase covers, as well as event T-shirts are available while supplies last. This event is free.

Intro to Asthma for Nursing, Respiratory Students

Note: Classes held at Children's Corporate Center are in Suite 255.
Students working toward a degree in a health profession will learn the basics of asthma management and how to teach those concepts to patients or other caregivers.

Available in Fox Valley and Metro-Milwaukee.

These companion courses give babysitters the skills they need to be successful on the job. Fast-paced, interactive and fun, participants prepare to provide the very best care for children of all ages.

Babysitters learn communication skills and how to apply basic principles of child development to ensure a positive child care experience. Vital information on injury prevention and safety for children and the care provider also is presented.

Successful sitter is a full-day program. Sitter CPR, which prepares babysitters to perform CPR and to clear obstructed airways for infants and children, is a separate half-day program.

The cost for both programs is $25. Registration is required. To register, call (414) 390-2166 or email chec@chw.org. Students are encouraged to bring a healthy lunch the day of Successful Sitter and a snack both days.


Home Alone

Saturday, September 20th, 2008 at CHEC: 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Home Alone is a class to help children 10 years and older learn how to be safe when home without supervision.  Topic areas include what to look for when coming home to an empty house, safe cooking, basic first aid, what to do in an emergency and setting family rules about homework, phone use and more.  A parent/guardian should attend with the child.

Calling all parents, guardians and child care providers. At these events we'll delve into the world of the child, discuss new techniques for parenting or caregiving and have fun. No child care provided.

Continuing education credits are available for the October 11th program. At the time of registration, you will need to pick two topics: on from Track 1 and one from Track 2. Free door prizes, snacks and parking. For registration information call (414) 390-2166.

This program focuses on the issue of bullying and its prevalence.  Learn the kinds of bullying that children are exposed to, the warning signs your child may be a victim and steps to prevention.

Come and learn about preventative cardiology for the whole family. Topics to be addressed include obesity, cholesterol, hypertension and ways to prevent heart disease.

That Makes Me Mad: Handling my Anger and Helping my Child deal with their Anger

This interactive workshop is designed to help adults understand the role of anger, become aware of how anger influences others and learn alternative ways to release anger while helping children learn how to effectively express angry energy.

Learn about the common food allergies children are facing today. Do we know why the number of children with food allergies is on the rise? Learn how to use an epi-pen and the secret ways companies are or are not advertising the ingredients in their products.
