Sedentary Activity
What is sedentary activity?
  • Watching TV or movies
  • Playing video games
  • Using the computer or Internet
  • Talking on the phone
Health risks of too much sedentary activity:
  • Increased weight gain.
  • Decreased metabolism – slowing down how the body uses energy.
  • Weak muscles and bones.
Benefits of decreasing sedentary activity:
  • Weight maintenance or weight loss.
  • Increased metabolism – speeding up how the body uses energy.
  • Stronger muscles and bones.
What you can do:
  • Cut back sedentary activity time by 30 minutes a day.
  • Record favorite shows and fast forward through the commercials.
  • Get active with friends and family during commercials by doing sit-ups, push-ups, stretching, jumping jacks, running up and down stairs or running in place.
  • Use exercise videos to increase physical activity.
  • Substitute physical activity such as walking, swimming or dancing for sedentary activity.
